With a multidisplay system you can use one or several additional servers as hot backup. A hot backup system can take on the role of any client during a presentation. The data is transferred to the backup server beforehand. Once a backup server is activated and plays the content of a defective client the signals need to be routed to the corresponding displays or projectors by a matrix. It is also possible to replace a hot backup server by another hot backup server.
This topic provides information on the following:
Controlling a hot backup via Avio
Once you have configured your multidisplay system you can add the required number of backup servers:
In the Media Pool click Devices, right-click the right section and select Add Client PC . Enter a name, e.g. if you enter 1 it is later called Backup 1.
For Type select Hot Backup and enter the backup server’s IP Address below.
For Hot Backup there are two options available:
All clients ... the backup server can take on the role of any client. This setting causes all data to be transferred later on.
Client list ... the backup server can take on the role of a client listed in the client list. This list can be edited by clicking Select target PCs.
Check box Add to Control Panel to create a control panel field.
Finish by clicking OK. Add further backup servers likewise.
The Control Panel shows the control panel fields of Master and Client PCs and of the backup servers. A mouse-click allows the tasks of a client to be transferred to the backup server.
Right-click the control panel field of the Client PC whose job is to be assumed by the backup server and select Activate hot backup followed by selecting the required backup server. Following this the backup server starts to present the same content that was presented on the previously clicked client PC.
When the defective client is ok again you can reactivate it by right-clicking its control panel field and selecting Reactivate Client + Hot-Backup. The client has now resumed its job and the backup server is again available for new tasks.
When the backup server has taken on the job of a client and there is still another backup server available in the system you can also perform a hot backup from the backup server by clicking Activate hot backup followed by clicking the free backup server.
The Avio System allows you to control the functions described above which is a very versatile feature as a hot backup also requires you to control the matrix for routing the signals. The corresponding programming allows you to combine the activation of the hot backup with the change-over of the signal and assign this to a button on the user interface. An evaluation of Alive information allows you also to implement the automatic activation of the backup server and the changeover of the signals.
When you open the Avio Manager you will find a folder for every client PC and for every backup server with the following channels under Hot Backup:
Client PCs
Client is replaced ... output of value 1 when the client was replaced by a backup server.
Restore client ... when the value is set to 1 the client resumes its job again.
Restore client + hot backup ... when the value is set to 1 the client resumes its job again and the backup server is available again for new backup tasks.
Activate hot backup XXX ... when the value is set to 1 the corresponding backup server takes on the role of the client. For every free backup server there is a separate channel.
Backup Server
Backup is in use ... output of value 1 when the backup server is performing a client job.
Restore hot backup ... when the value is set to 1 the backup server is free and a separate channel is available.
Activate hot backup XXX ... when the value is set to 1 the corresponding backup server takes on the backup server’s job which took on a client’s job. For every free backup server a separate channel is available.
